23 fall in ski lift accident in Sierra Nevada |
Monday, 09 March 2009 |
Within the beginners' area of Borreguiles at approximately 10am, both teachers and students were injured in an accident where a broken cable resulted in five ski lift chairs plumetting to the ground. First to the scene in this Granada resort, were ski monitors and staff working within the area.
Woman remains in intensive care
Out of the 15 hospitalised individuals, one woman is being kept in intensive care. The Guardia Civil has started receiving denuncias from those affected by the accident. Ski lift experts (both Spanish and Austrian) have examined the ski lift to determine exactly what might have caused the mechanical failure that resulted in the serious damage and injury. The PP (Partido Popular) has also criticised Cetursa (the company which runs the resort in Sierra Nevada) for not keeping a mobile intensive care unit on site. The political party has also challenged the company for making cutbacks in staff that could possibly have impacted on the maintenance of the machinery. For instance, just why didn’t the automatic braking system kick in?
