Marina del Este
Set between La Herradura to the west and Almunecar to the east, Marina del Este began life as a harbour for boats, although it is now also a residential area. Unlike the port of Motril, 25 km to the east, Marina del Este does not handle cargo ships but only leisure crafts i.e. yachts, sailing boats and small pleasure crafts. With 227 moorings Marina del Este is not overly large, although popular in the summer because of the guaranteed sunshine and easy access to the Costa del Sol and Granada. The harbour was created from a small inlet next to a large rock known as Penon de las Caballas, and both older properties and the recently built apartments overlook the sea. Tennis courts, two diving schools and a number of shops, bars and restaurants are all within walking distance. The area surrounding the Marina del Este port is known as Los Berengueles, this in turn is part of the Punta de la Mona, a rocky promontory which became popular for holiday homes in the 1950's. For those without a boat wishing to go to sea, boats can be chartered from Marina del Este for day trips and longer adventures.Images from Marina del Este
