Almuñécars Mayor Benavides visits Syria |
Friday, 28 November 2008 |
Subsidised by the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation, Juan Carlos Benavides spent six days with the Syrian Vice President, discussing economic opportunities (including the promotion of chirimoyas on the Asian continent), as well as celebrating the alliance of the distinct civilisations.
Almuñécar as a tourist destination
Although he received criticism for the expense of the trip, it was also Mayor Benavides’ opportunity to promote the town of Almuñécar and the village of La Herradura as great places to visit, bringing along to the event one of the local Flamenco dance school troups as evidence of just one of the cultural highlights back in Spain. It seems that this is one of many trips taken by the Mayor and his former wife since 2007 and so he has been at the receiving end of criticism from opposing political party representatives and others.
