50 years' worth of arguing over a waterfall in Motrl
Monday, 09 February 2009
The Community of Regantes in Motríl wants to make the most of the Cañizares waterfall by harnessing the energy to produce hydroelectricity. Well known by anyone who passes through Tajo de los Vados along the N323, it seems that the waterfall offers the potential to produce annually some four million kilowatts of power. Motríl Regantes want to build a mini hydroelectric plant with at least four fifths of the water (the other fifth belongs to Salobreña) to earn more than 300,000 Euros per year.

Money committed to a day care centre in Motríl

Joaquín Zúniga, the president of the 6000 family-strong Community of Regantes in Motríl, has explained that the money earned from the hydroelectric system would be put towards the plumbing of the Community, as well as the creation of a day care centre for the elderly in Motríl . The idea is to set up a foundation for the funds, with the project making use of the building of the Agricultural Co-operative in the Avenida de Salobreña, currently in an abandoned state but very central to the town.Until now, their project has been rejected on the basis of a plan to manage water resources in the Béznar- Rules area. It turns out that there has been no progress on this plan and so the Regantes will continue to push their own plan with the Agency in charge of water throughout Andalusia.
