Las Palomas is a development on Cerro Gordo, overlooking the bay and the town of La Herradura. It comprises several independent urbanisations - Los Romeros, Tropicana (1 and 2), Girasoles apartments and Girasoles (1 and 2), Montepino (1,2,3 and 4). There are also many individual villas within its boundary. Las Palomas properties are among the most sought after in the area due to the planning skills of the original developers which resulted in an attractive balance between the built areas and the diverse and well-planted garden areas distinctive to each urbanisation. Unfortunately, some recent municipal licences to build have not respected this ethic, resulting in two untypical blocks of apartments being built on the site.

Las Palomas is best reached by taking the 'old' road (340) from Maro (Nerja) and turning 1st. right after the tunnel under Cerro Gordo. Coming from Granada (Almuecar direction) turn into the village of La Herradura at the lights near the filling station, turn right at the beach road and follow the road up over Cerro Gordo taking the 3rd turning on the right into Las Palomas. (The entrance to Tropicana, however, is from the 4th turning on the right further up the hill).

In the summer Las Palomas opens a popular lido with a large swimming pool surrounded by wide areas of lawns. A bar and light meals service is also available at the lido. Day tickets only are sold at the entrance (ie no 'season' tickets are provided).
