The town of Albondon in Andalusia is said to be of Arab origin. When the Christians conquered Albondon, they expelled the Moriscos and thus the population of the area went down. Albondon remained the property of Count Cifuentes and finally became independent in 1653. In the 19th century, the population of Albondon started to grow thanks to the cultivation and production of wine. Albondon is 25km from the Sierra Nevada ski slopes, which is a stunning visit in the winter. You can enjoy skiing over 70km along 45 pistes. The San Luis parish church in Albondon is well worth a visit and has the famous sculpture of The Virgin Mary by Jose De Mora. One of the best things about holidays in this area is that it is so quiet and relaxing, a slice of real Spain. The Alpujarras have excellent trekking trails, with tracks to suit all ages and abilities. Cycling and horse riding are also very popular and easily accessible. The closest beach is in La Rabita, a small relatively undeveloped coastal town with fabulous fish restaurants. The beaches are extremely clean and boat hire is available for fishing trips.
