In the summer the population of the village rises to around 6,000 people, although in the winter there only half this many. Castell del Ferro remains a largely Spanish village, although there is a small community of expats (mainly from the UK) who have found the quiet pace of life, sunshine and local hospitality irresistible.
Like nearby Salobreña, Castell del Ferro has a castle of Arab origin at its heart, and was one of the many villages occupied by the Moors in this area. Indeed the castle was an important part of the Arab defences and one of a chain that stretched along the coast. The next village to the east, Castillo de Baos has a new centre for the Interpretation of Granadas coastal defences (Centro de Interpretacin de las Defensas de la Costa Granadina) which details the history of these costal forts. To the east the Arab defences stretch as far as La Rabita, the easternmost town of the Costa Tropical.
Within Castell del Ferro itself most activity centres around the main square or in the summer around Castell's beach and promenade which stretches 2 miles along the sands. There are a number of good bars and restaurants both around the square and along the sea front, along with three supermarkets stocking all the usual items. For fresh fruit and vegetables and a taste of Spanish life the weekly market takes place each Saturday.
A further taste of local life can be had by trying a plate of 'migas de harina' soft fried breadcrumbs with 'pulpo seco' dried octopus and fresh sardines (sardinas frescas). The sardines and octopus will almost certainly have been caught locally and is likely to be no more than a few hours old by the time it reaches your plate!
