Dia de Candelaria, known as Candlemas in English has a representation for celebration both in the religious and secular calendars. The 2nd February is the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox and coincidentally is also 40 days after the birth of Christ and the time when he would have been presented to the church, much like we do today in the form of baptism. The weather on this date is thought to be a predictor of what can be expected later in the year. In the USA the day is also known as Groundhog Day. Lobres celebrates with night time festivities, particularly with hot chocolate and churros (fried sweet pastries).
