Festival of Saint Sebastian. Also celebrated in a number of other villages particularly in Bubion, Caniles and Orgiva. San Sebastian was a Christian Martyr and Saint persecuted for his Christian beliefs by the Roman Emperor Diocletian who sentenced him to death. He was lead into a field, tied to a tree and shot with arrows, a scene often depicted in art. However when a widow, St Irene of Rome, went to retrieve his body for burial she found he was still alive. She nursed him back to health only for him to be persecuted a second time, when he was beaten to death and thrown into a privy. His body was retrieved by a Christian widow after appearing to her in an apparition. His remains are asserted to be a basilica in Rome known to day as San Sebastiano Fuori le Mura. San Sebastian is said to be the deliverer from pestilence.
